AIU Faculty Member Offered a Course at a Partner University: “Searching for a Korean Modernity” – Dr. Kevin Hockmuth
In February 2024, Dr. Kevin Hockmuth, Associate Professor in AIU’s Global Studies Program taught a short intensive course on “Searching for a Korean Modernity” as a visiting professor at Sciences Po Lille, one of AIU’s partner universities in France. Although he is currently visiting another partner university for research, AIU caught up with him to ask about his experience.
AIU: How would you describe your experience at Sciences Po Lille?
Dr. Hockmuth: It was fantastic. It was clear that they are experienced with the visiting professor program. They set up all the travel arrangements and classes and everything went smoothly. The liaison was very helpful.
AIU: How did you find out about the program and apply?
Dr. Hockmuth: I found out about the opportunity on AIU’s message board then met online with Sciences Po Lille’s Head of International Programs & Services. The application process is not terribly intensive. I submitted my CV and a syllabus based on some classes I teach. They wanted an 18-hour course focused on East Asia, but I had a lot of flexibility with the content.
AIU: What was it like teaching in France?
Dr. Hockmuth: I had some flexibility to schedule the course in 2-hour or 3-hour blocks, spread across up to three weeks and could choose the days to fit my schedule. It was a small class, with only about eight students, mostly international students, and they were very good. I arranged six 3-hour sessions over two weeks, which was intensive, including grading, but it was well worth it. I also got to see a lot of Lille and the surrounding area. It was my first time in Europe, so I wanted to make the most of the experience.
AIU: Do you have any other feedback on the experience?
Dr. Hockmuth: I think it was a great opportunity to get to know one of AIU’s partner universities better and relatively easy, since they arranged and covered everything, including accommodation and travel and paid me for the teaching, as well. I highly recommend it and would like to participate again in the future!
